These Days

These days are pretty exciting! Friday was y last day of work and I am now officially a full-time student again! I’m home in Clearwater visiting my parents then I’ll be off to South Florida and Key West with all of my best friends! We’ve dubbed the adventure “post-grad spring break” and I cannot wait. After this week full of fun I will be starting my first graduate classes in Integrated Marketing Communications. It’s an amazing time in my life and I can’t wait to have a ton of adventures this summer.

My best friend has an internship in D.C. this summer and has been badgering me to book a flight to visit her. Well, last week the flight prices were just right and I made a snap decision. I haven’t seen you in a while D.C., I can’t wait to catch up and see what you have to offer now that I’m an adult!

I’m still a big fan of Kayak, which is where I found this flight, but Mashable has some great alternatives for the next time you’re scouring the Internet for the cheapest flight possible.

I am digging some of the decor choices in this featured Texan house from Freshome.

I finally made a gallery wall! I’ve been saying I wanted to do it for months now. Last weekend I finally buckled down and got it done. I think it looks great and that bubble mirror really pulls it all together (pssst…it was only $20 at Marshall’s).

Buzzfeed offered some tricky crafting hacks. Now, why didn’t I ever think of any of these?

Bought this great vintage feeling bikini top from American Eagle for $25 last weekend, sadly I decided to leave the bottoms behind and just go with a solid colored pair I already own.

A Goal Achieved

Last year I set a goal for myself. I wanted to read all of the Sherlock Holmes books and all of Agatha Christie’s books in order. I have always enjoyed Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot character. I have been reading that series on and off since I was a preteen. But, I wanted to read everything in the order they were published so that I would understand the references to previous stories and get a feel for how the series developed over time. On Tuesday I achieved a major part of my goal!

I have finished all of the Sherlock Holmes books AND all of the Hercule Poirot stories. For those of you thinking I’ve been dealing with a normal series of 4 or 5 books…it is much more than that. The Sherlock Holmes series includes over 10 books in total. The Hercule Poirot series of Agatha Christie’s has 34 books. And I have finished all of them! I have to say I will miss dear old Poirot. I’m sure I’ll probably re-read a few of the books and visit mon ami from time to time. Now, I am on to the Miss Marple series by Agatha Christie. This series has about 14 books. So, I am hoping I will be completely finished sometime this summer. This will be a pretty exciting achievement of mine as I have been working on reading all of these books since last September. Look out for my completion post and a review post on some of the other books I have also been reading lately.

These Days

These crazy days. I think everyone had a somber week after all of the tragedies in Boston and Texas. It’s Sunday again and I can only hope for a better week this time around. My thoughts are with all of the people affected.

On a happier note, may mom and sister came to visit this weekend. So, we had some great family time with a 5k and a nice day floating down a river. Here are some of my favorite links from last week…

Artist Profile – Lauren Munns

A little while ago I was able to talk to a great young artist that I went to high school with about her work and her life…

-Have you always wanted to be an artist?

No, first wanted to be a paleontologist, tae kwon do master, then artist then writer then artist again.

-Tell me about how your style evolved.

I did a lot of drawing in the beginning, the year book cover designing phase with sharpie marker, then I went through a phase of learning the skills and basics, then picked up ceramics out of the blue. It has definitely changed to be more feminine. It is humans vs. the natural world and more organic.

-Your senior show in college centered on the theme of hair, tell me about that. How did you land on that? What mediums did you focus on?

My piece was called colony, and they were mostly ceramic but with hair on them. Symbolizing a community and how we’re connected. They were all kind of strung together; not strictly natural but with human qualities to them (the hair). It was hair from my sister and from my friends; it brought in people who are special to me.

I have this fixation with hair and teeth, which is loaded with symbolism and questions. I was thinking about home a lot. It’s cliché but you’re graduating and seeing what you’ve become, all of that played a part. Taking the idea that everyone is connected and putting it all together.

-Who or what would you say has been your biggest influence?

I don’t know. There’s just too many. Hong Chun Zhang, she does these giant panel drawings of braids and they relate to her mother and sister and her Chinese culture. They’re all very feminine artists whose work deals with the nature of women. A lot of them draw from their own cultures and family histories. I’m not really into political art at all. Mostly ceramics since that’s what I’ve been looking at more in the past couple of years. Hong just came out of nowhere and I was just Googling and her stuff came up and they were just amazing.

Kate MacDowell, I found out about her when we had to do a contemporary ceramics project. She does a lot of life vs. death, human vs. nature. She has a sculpture of a human heart with tentacles around it and I had drawn the same exact thing only about 6 months before. That’s when I knew that I should be doing ceramics it was a discovery of faith.

-Do you focus more on color or texture? Any other element that usually comes to the forefront in your work?

I really like texture which is why I think I’m so drawn to ceramics. It’s touching, kinetic. I love the feel of it. I try to portray it even in my drawings. Not so much color; I’m a very neutral person. Form, but that could be a given since its sculptural. More natural and organic forms with curves and feminine. Female and wombs not hard and architectural.

IMG_3187

-Do you see your style as an artist leaking into other styles of your life and vice versa? (Fashion, Interior Design, etc.)

I wear a lot of neutrals and my house is very neutral. In clothes, something that has a great texture and is able to stand out without being a bold color. It’s the joke at work that I never wear color.

These Days

It’s Sunday again and I am already dreading Monday morning. In case any of you haven’t heard, I was accepted to grad school this past week and I will be starting classes in 1 month! It is going to be an adjustment from working full time back to college life, but I can’t wait. I am already planning on how I will spend all of my free time, what projects to work on and what I want to learn. I love the idea of having more time during the day, instead of just at night after work. Here are some of my favorite links from this past week…

Apparently I’m completely obsessed with creeping on others’ home decor. Here is a great house tour from apartment therapy.

I cam across this mix tape post on little chief Honeybee, this is definitely something I might try in the future!

I’ve been trying out some at home beauty remedies. This DIY dry shampoo might have to be my next experiment.

I absolutely love these DIY jeweled statement earrings from A Pair and A Spare.

I wish I had a backdoor in my apartment for this perfect Welcome stone matt.

I feel like this is such a perfect Spring outfit, too bad it’s already feeling like the middle of Summer in sunny Florida…

Lately, I have been wanting more storage boxes / baskets. This up cycle project turning cardboard boxes into stylish storage boxes seems like the perfect budget solutions.

Did you find any great links this week?

There’s A Reason They Call It A “Post Graduate” Degree

As I am sure some of you have seen or heard me shouting from the rooftops with glee, I will be leaving the full time working world to re-enter the college realm. This summer, in fact in about 1 month, I will begin my postgraduate degree in Integrated Marketing Communications. I can’t say it enough how excited I am to go back to school and build knowledge and skills based on my interests.

I waited an eternity of almost 2 months to hear whether or not I had been accepted. During that time, I just kept going over and over the different things I was going to do once I was back in school. All the side projects I would have the time and energy for and all of the great new personal and professional connections I would make. I imagine myself leaving the house mid-morning everyday and hitting a favorite coffee shop to get some work done before going to class.

Before I started my undergrad degree, all I could think about was the friends I would make and the amazing adventures we would have together. The second time around, I am just as excited to make some new friends. But, my goals and commitments are noticeably more skills and profession oriented. I have never been so excited to use my time to learn. More coding languages, strengthening my photo editing skills and anything else I think will be valuable knowledge to me in the future. On top of a normal course load and a graduate assistantship I am already figuring out what free online courses I want to take. It won’t all be work, work, work. However, there is a distinct difference this time around. It’s a post (under)graduate degree. I have the desire to do more this time. I think my mantra for grad school is going to be “work hard, play hard” and I can’t wait to get started!

For those of you in grad school, have you seen a difference in your commitment to learning the second time around?

Grad School, Here I Come!

I am happy to announce that I will be starting grad school this summer! I am so excited and I’ve wanted to shout it from the roof tops ever since I found out on Friday last week. In the year since I graduated with my undergrad degree I have really missed being in an educational environment. I have also begun to work on more personal projects. Going back to school will give me the opportunities to commit more time to these projects and get some awesome experience along the way.

These Days

Another weekend is almost over. Don’t worry though, you can put Monday off for a little longer with some links! I got some very exciting news on Friday, don’t worry you will all know what it was soon enough. The weeks seem like they are really starting to fly by. Summer is quickly approaching and with that brings plenty of traveling. I can’t wait to see so many of my favorite people and places in the next few months. In the mean time, here are some of my favorite links from last week…

Moorea Seal had a great post about filling a new space by Savannah from Maiedae, the pictures are fantastic!

Check out my post from Thursday, chronicling our homemade sushi experiment!

The Huffington Post wrote about a recent study that found the best U.S. cities for people in their 20s, looks like our top 3 choices for the next move are all on there!

Only 5 more weeks until I am in Key West with some of my favorite people in the whole world! I can’t wait for our little post – grad spring break trip.

I love this round-up of Presidents’ off-duty style.

Harley decided she needed a cape while watching tv on Thursday night. She got to go to the Springtime Tallahassee Festival with us on Saturday and she did great. Not too much of a crazy pup at all, we decided we are going to bring her to more dog-friendly events about town. Plus, she loves all the attention she gets when she’s out and about. :-)

Now get out there and enjoy what’s left of the weekend!

An Adventure In Homemade Sushi

Last night we had a little adventure in making our own sushi! We’ve been wanting to try this for a while, but kept forgetting to buy any of the necessary supplies / ingredients. So, we made a run to Publix last night after work and just decided to dive right in. We bought the staples like the seaweed paper, sushi rice, wasabi and ginger. Then, we picked our main ingredients. We went with smoked salmon, imitation crab meat, avocado, cucumbers and I added some jalepenos to the mix…

We got home and got to work. We couldn’t find one of those bamboo rolling matts. Instead, we folded up some tinfoil into a square and improvised with that.

Step 1

Lay the seaweed paper on your rolling matt or whatever you’re using to make your rolls. It is VERY dry and consequently rips / breaks easily. But the good news is, the rice is so moist it helps keep the broken pieces together. Spread your cooked sushi rice onto the seaweed paper. Not too thick and try to get it evenly across the entire area. When finished, turn the entire thing over so that the fresh side of the seaweed paper is facing up.

Step 2

Place your ingredients in a line all the way down one side of the paper. Remember, you don’t want to place the ingredients all over the area because you will be rolling this and it may get a little messed up or lumpy.

Step 3

They see me rollin’. Take hold of the side of the seaweed paper with all of your ingredients and begin (you guessed it) rolling it. Try to roll it as tight as possible so that everything doesn’t fall out and splash into your soy sauce as soon as you pick it up. We tried putting our rice on the inside and outside of the rolls, one of each. We had some trouble with the seaweed paper ripping and / or the rice busting out everywhere.

Overall, the rolls weren’t pretty BUT they tasted pretty good! And now that we have the staples, making sushi in the future will be cheaper (and more fun) than going out for sushi dinner. Next up…dessert sushi, thoughts?

I Can’t Live Without – April

I can’t believe it’s April already! The end of this month marks one year since I graduated college. Why does time seem to go by faster with each passing year? I’m sure this month will be no exception. Here are some items I can’t live without this month…

Indoor Plants

I have been meaning to get some more plants in my life, maybe April will be the month I actually make it happen!

New Dr. Who Episodes

I discovered Dr. Who just before the holidays and blazed through all 6 seasons on Netflix. Part 2 of the 7th season premiered on Saturday and I can’t wait to be all caught up. Haven’t you heard? Bow ties are cool.

Lots and Lots of Throw Pillows

I love that throw pillows are an easy way to update and freshen the decor of a room. I’m planning on making a few pillow covers as a cheap and easy update.

Tasty Lacey Photography

Thanks to Susie Bubble for sharing this amazing artist. I love that she mixes photography of normal objects with other paper craft products. It makes for a fun twist.

Healthy Smoothies

I really want to buy a Ninja blender this month and start drinking more veggie & fruit smoothies. I’ve been seeing so many amazing recipes online, it’s just too tempting!

Coffee is a Must Every Month

Coffee, all day every day.

Sandals, Sandals and More Sandals

Sandal season is back, baby.

Aviators

I tried these sunglasses on this past weekend at the Michael Kors outlet. Why is it always the expensive sunglasses that look best.

What are your favorite pics that you can’t live without this month?
